Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry

Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry
A committee of representatives from Great Britain and the United States appointed in November 1945 to study the question of Jewish immigration (see ALIYA) to Palestine and the future of the British mandate.
After numerous meetings and hearings in the region and elsewhere, it issued a report on 20 April 1946. The recommendations included, among others, the immediate issuing of 100,000 immigration certificates for Palestine to Jewish survivors of Nazi and fascist persecution. Although U.S. president Harry Truman accepted much of the report, especially the recommendation concerning Jewish immigration, the British government did not accept the report. The Palestine problem was turned over to the United Nations.
